Why We Feel Important at The Airport

Airports have a way of making people feel special and excited about their upcoming journey.  The airport is the gateway to the world, where travellers from all over the globe come together to start a journey and experience new adventures.  This diversity of people and cultures creates an atmosphere that is unique and exciting.  It’s like a universal language translator, because where else can you find someone who can complain about the cost of a luggage check in any foreign language, and you are still able to understand them. It’s an annoyance that bonds us, and connects us as a human species.

Emotions run high at the airport, from the excitement of starting a new adventure to the sadness of saying goodbye to loved ones. And there may even be some fear or anxiety for those who are nervous about flying. We compensate for it, by imagining what we’d do in the event something we’re to go wrong.

“How far off the ground during a nose dive scenario do I have to be before somersaulting to safety out of the plane?”

Or if there were some nefarious passengers up to no good, “How can I use the plastic meal tray and cutlery to incapacitate them, before they take over the plane?”

Despite the range of emotions, the airport is a place where people are doing something different and breaking away from their everyday lives.  We feel special knowing that the majority of the world is toiling in their mundane, and we are doing something different and exciting.

The idea of adventure is always on the horizon at the airport. People have paid a lot of money for transportation and are eager to explore new places.  That strange land we visit might be a date with our destiny.  We may find a new love, gain a new perspective to life, or find our true calling on this planet, and this hub of activity could be the conduit for that.

When we stay at a nice hotel, we feel spoiled sometimes, almost like royalty. People may feel important, because the airport itself is generally well maintained, with nice bathrooms and amenities that make it feel like a hotel that can shuttle you to different cities through the air.

It’s not all about the aesthetics of an airport that make us feel special as there are different types of adventures to look forward to as well.  For example, going through security and customs can sometimes make people feel like their rights are being violated.  They get worked up emotionally by proselytizing rights and freedoms arguments to other passengers who just want to mind their own business in the frustratingly long security screening line up. It’s a chance for these social justice warriors let “the man” at the airport know about the oppressive safety protocols, only to capitulate because the anticipation of the journey ahead and the non refundable ticket to the Caribbean help to override these feelings.  It seems, no one is ever mad enough about these issues to sacrifice 5 days and 6 nights at one of the worlds most beautiful all inclusive resorts.

The airport stores, restaurants, and duty-free shops also add to the feeling of being in a special place, almost like going to a mall you rarely visit that sells duty free alcohol you can take across international borders without incident. Unlike those “moonshine” runs that got you in trouble when you were in the Army.

While waiting for a flight, people can disconnect from the world and take time to think, meditate, sleep, or relax. The airport is a place where people can indulge in their cell phones and social media, making it seem like jet-setting is normal for them.  You get to tell or brag to your friends and say stuff like…

“I just got off the plane from Los Angeles, or just landed in Paris.

MY flight leaves in an hour”

…Make note on our emphasis on “My” in the “my flight” conversation. This is very much our journey, and that’s what makes it special.

Finally, the act of preparing for a trip can be exciting in itself. People may buy new clothes for their travels, making them feel good and look good in their new threads. We get a chance to purchase crap we don’t really need but for this trip. Things like, travel pillows, new headphones, and a nice travel bag.

To sum it all up, the airport is a place that makes people feel special and excited about their upcoming journeys. The diversity of people and cultures, the anticipation of adventure, and the feeling of breaking away from everyday life all contribute to this feeling of excitement and specialness.
